Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - October 4, 2023

Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - October 4, 2023

Let's start with an update on the native brook trout streams.  The Shenandoah National Park is still closed to fishing.  I imagine that will remain in effective for a while.  We will keep you updated if this changes.  April and May is the best time to fish these streams, which is why we conduct our Mountain Trout Schools at that time.  I already have people signing up for these and although some of close to being full, I still have openings in all.  So don't miss out!

Now let's move onto the stocked trout streams.  The VA DWR has started stocking some streams as of Oct 2 including Hawksbill in Luray. They will continue to stock throughout the month so check their schedule for updates. If you are strictly a dry fly fisherman then use Dave's Hopper size 8, Letort Hopper size 12 or Humpy (red or yellow) size 12.   I find that I do better with nymphs and streamers.  For nymphs the Copper John Zebra size 14, Bead Head Prince size 14 and San Juan Worm size 10. For streamers the Betsy Streamer size 10, Shenandoah Skunk Streamer size 10, and Murray's Marauder Olive size 12 are working. Be sure to have the appropriate licenses while fishing these streams.

We just received some of the NEW St. Croix Connect Fly Rods and more will be arriving next week. Stop by the fly shop and try one out.  Nice medium to fast fly rods for the money...$295 with rod case and 5-year warranty.
